The Club executive will be meeting with Paul Gaberdiel of the DNR, just prior to our SORVA meeting. So we should have some more info at the meeting, about where we’ll be going in 2017. We’ll have a couple of hats present at the meeting, for members to make a choice for a new CC-SORVA hat. Come out and give your input on the hats and get updated on the direction CC-SORVA will be taking in 2017. One thing is for sure. We’ll be busy!

Michigan Trails Advisory Council to meet Thursday, July 6 in Roscommon

The Michigan Trails Advisory Council will hold its next work session and regular meeting Thursday, July 6, at the Ralph A. MacMullan Conference Center, located at 104 Conservation Drive in Roscommon. The public meeting will begin at 10 a.m.

The MTAC was created by Part 721, Pure Michigan Trails, of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act, 1994 PA 451, to advise the Department of Natural Resources director and the governor on the creation, development, operation and maintenance of motorized and non-motorized trails in the state, including, but not limited to, snowmobile, biking, equestrian, hiking, off-road vehicle, water and skiing trails. In advising the DNR director and governor on the creation and development of motorized and non-motorized trails in the state, the council shall seek to have the trails linked wherever possible.

• General fund update.
• Trust fund update.
• Changes to U.S. Forest Service saw policy.

We have two cabins rented at the Jack Pine Lodge on M-94 south of Shingleton. We'll trailer there the morning of the 18th and be on the trails after lunch. We can ride the area through the 20th and return home in the evening. The two cabins will sleep around 15 people. And there are camp sites available. If you want to camp you will have to call the Jack Pine to reserve a camp site. (906-450-8888). We'll have to have a meeting as we get closer, for all those wanting to ride this event, so that we can make plans for bringing food. The cabins have full kitchens.

The group will meet at the parking area of the Chippewa Snow Chaser's trail head on S. Strongs Rd. When reaching Strongs, turn south and the lot is just south of the motel. There are now thunderstorms in the forecast, along with up to an inch of rain for Saturday. So it seems prudent to cancel the Tahquamenon Falls ride. I hate to do it but at this point it seems best. See you the next weekend for our Grand Marais ride.

First meeting of 2018

This will be our spring shake-down run. We'll ride the two tracks and do lunch along the trail somewhere. So bring a lunch. We'll have tools on hand to cook burgers, brats, and hot dogs

We'll unload at the Snow Chasers groomer barn on Strongs Road just south of the intersection of Strongs Rd. and M-28. We'll plan on eating lunch at the Driftwood in St. Ignace. We'll stop in Moran on the way down for those that need gas or a potty break.

There is parking alongside M-134 on the west and east side of the overpass.  Most will unload on the west side of the overpass and the overflow can unload on the east side. Lots of room for everyone.

Trevor Hoffer leads this ride from Bay Mills Casino. We'll travel south across M-28 via trails/Rexford road, Arbutus TT, with a pit stop at Legion park in Hulbert. We'll continue on to the Falls, and eat lunch at the cul de sac by the Falls. Afterward we"ll take the East/West road and other random trails on the way back to Bay Mills. Ride leaves the parking lot at 9:30 sharp.

Park at the Two Hearted ORV Parking area located on H37/CR 407 (also called Deer Park Rd) approximately 2 miles north of Pine Stump Junction or 20 miles (30 minutes) North of Newberry on the West side of the road where Co Rd 416 crosses. The ride leaves the parking lot at 9:30 AM sharp. Arrive early enough to unload and be ready to leave.
The ride will go south/west from there following roads and trails arriving in Grand Marais for a late lunch. With all of the recent rain, there could be some “water encounters” although nothing significant. There are at least two restaurants in Grand Marais, sometimes a lunch truck, or there is a nice pavilion with picnic tables overlooking the bay if you want to pack your own. Total trip is maybe 100 miles so quads need to bring extra gas or purchase some in Grand Marias.

Dave Smithers leads the ride out of Bay Mills. We'll ride west to Spectacle Lake, Mission Hill, Tower Hill, Iroquois Mountain, Avery Lake, McNearney Lake area. Bring lunch to eat along the trail. Meet early at Bay Mills Casino with a plan to leave there at 9:30.

We LEAVE the Bay Mills west parking lot at 10:00 sharp. (get there early enough to unload and be ready to leave at 10). The route will be to take various trails south of M28 to Hulbert and eat lunch there. The majority of the group want to eat at the Happy Hour bar in Hulbert, so that is the plan. After lunch we will loop around Hulbert going North and back across Avery Grade to Bay Mills. Probably close to 100 miles

Trout Lake Township park start.  Points South and West….maybe Naubinway ???  Stops at snowmobile museum and each lunch either at restaurant or pasty place or your own lunch.  Time depending maybe Rock rapids, split rock, Rexton for gas

Three start options 1.A) 9:30 AM Long Ride Bay Mills start, travel south across 28 via trails/Rexford road, Arbutus trail,  2.A) Short Ride Pick up group at Sno-Chasers parking in Strongs at 10:00 then 11:00 lunch at Legion park Hulbert, go North to falls, 3.A)  Even shorter ride, starting at 11:00....trailer to Legion park in Hulbet and ride north and then back south to Hulbert.    Then Long Ride Group goes East West rd and back via Avery grade and tbd trails, and short ride group goes South back to Strongs or East West rd and back via Avery grade and McNearney Lake/Salt Point roads to parking area.  Very short group self directs themselves back to Hulbert.

Start at SiIver Creek ORV parking North of Newberry CR446.  Ride trails west Grand Sable Lake and Grand Marais, lunch at the restaurants, then east on trails back to parking 110 miles. Ride will be led by Roy Hart.

Meet at the Hessel Airport, located south of the casino in Hessel on North 3-Mile Rd

Head east through the woods to Nordquist Road. M-129 north to the Swede Road. East on the Swede Road to Stec Side Road crossing M-48. Head south to Prentiss Bay Road, to Warner. This road goes to Yopperman’s Bar for lunch.  Alternatively, you can bring your own and eat it while others go inside, but it may take a while.

Warner back to the Sand Ridge Road coming out at Fairview Road. Fairview to 26 Mile Road, to the Gogamain Road. Head west down to Pennington Road. Pennington road to Riverside. West on Riverside to the Sterlingville Substation. Head north to 21 Mile, to Steele Road. Steele to Townline Road. Townline Road to the Fish Road. Fish Road south to the Simmons Settlement Road. From here going east to the Webb Road. Webb Road comes out at the Italian Cemetery. Down through the Bay City Lake trail and back to the airport.

This trip is approximately 80 miles. There are some secondary asphalt roads that we can’t avoid.

Ride location has been changed to Indian River starting at the Indian River OHV Parking lot, 5844 South Straights Highway and White Rd. Start time is 9:30am sharp. Please arrive by 9:00am to unload and be ready for rider/driver meeting by9:20am.A trail lunch stop is planned at Thumb Lake Park (00665 Magee Rd.). Two new porta johns are available on site. Three picnic tables are located under a pavilion BUT there is no guarantee they will be vacant. The is no fuel available on this 70 mile ride. The route will consist of ORV trails, forest roads, logging roads, and county roads. This will be a more technical ride than past Club rides; the terrain and trails dictate a slower pace. Some of the trails will have low hanging branches that will brush against riders and machines. In pre-riding, none of the small branches were a cause for concern. There are areas of deep sand, washboard, washouts, hills, off-camber riding, water/mud, rock,&  some short sections of dirt road to connect to the next trail. About 3 miles of pavement or less are in the route.

Effort was put into developing a route to minimize rough sections and dust; much of the route is heavily wooded so even if it's dry the woods will be low dust. This is a fun,challenging route which is mostly off the official ORV route.
